My wonderful students are a very diverse group. My classroom has two students that have Individualized Education Plans and eight students that speak two or more languages. The majority of my students qualify for free lunch which means that their families are experiencing significant financial struggles.
We have worked very hard this year to get our reading level up to what is considered grade level and our motto is "No excuses!" The vast majority of my students have improved their reading levels significantly.
Each week the students go to the classroom lending library to choose books for the week. The books they choose must be at their reading level.
My classroom lending library needs more books. The books are used over and over again from year to year. Reading at their "just right level" greatly increases the odds that they will end second grade at or above where they should be.
My Project
Books at a students "just right reading level" are imperative to helping them learn to read and to improving their reading skillls. I currently have a limited number of titles which means that students are rereading titles over and over again. Reading is the most fundamental skill that early elementary students can learn.
Books like The Story of Ferdinand and Curious George are classics all children should read.
It is priceless to watch a child open a book and get so involved in it that they loose track of time. I want to provide that experience all year. My students love to read and these books will help keep the love of reading alive in my classroom!
