Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an inquisitive group of third graders in an inner-city public school in Arizona. With over 90% of our students receiving free or reduced rate lunch, one might think that our students are poor, but that would be far from the truth! What our children lack in money, they make up for in their curiosity and desire to learn! My room is the home for the gifted students at my grade level, and they have an insatiable appetite for information.
I have been told that as a teacher I help to create the future, but the truth is that the creative minds in my care hold the keys to greatness within them and they can change the world regardless of their socioeconomic status!
My Project
Many of the students in my class come to school wounded by stressors and traumatic life events beyond their years. These children struggle with knowing how to handle the range of emotions that they feel, which in turn affects their ability to reach their full potential as learners. They are complex and often challenging, and they need teachers who are going to step out of the academic box to help them develop the social-emotional skills that they need to heal. I want to be that kind of teacher! Having a wide variety of kid-friendly books about behavior and emotions (as well as a few adult-learning books for my own personal growth) will help me to do that.
By integrating these quality social-emotional themed picture books into my curriculum through carefully planned lessons, I'll provide my students with strategies to cope with the "larger than life" feelings they battle every day and how to handle them in positive ways.
Through this process, my students will gain emotional skills that will make them more successful in their future lives.
Even with these positive, intentional steps on my part, there are bound to be times when these students emotions get the best of them. During these moments, I want to provide them with a safe place in the classroom where they can go to cool down. The sensory tools that I have requested will be beneficial in helping them to learn to manage and regulate these emotions.
Although helping children of trauma to understand and regulate their emotions will without a doubt increase their academic success in school, it will also increase the likelihood of experiencing a fulfilling
