This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My children are a group of middle grade students that are eager and willing to learn. Our school is located on the south side of Chicago. Unfortunately, because of their location, many people already believe my students are at a disadvantage. I don't agree!
Every student can learn and every student should be given the same opportunities as their peers.
A lot of my students have experienced communities riddled with violence and because of this, I believe they are stronger and even more determined not to let their environment define their possibilities. I have the pleasure of working with two sixth grade classes this year and our journey will strengthen and build upon previous math and science skills while preparing us for the future.
My Project
The story of Just Mercy shows lawyer Brian Stevenson and his heroism as he fights for those that can't fight for themselves.
So many of our students are visual learners so what better way to continue our learning from print and discussion than to seeing the story presented on the screen.
This movie has so many parallels with the lives of the students in my community. Just like the odds and the system were stacked against Walter, my students face obstacles that can sometimes be discouraging and life altering.
Watching this movie, I hope would spark a sense of inspiration and it would also be a great start to our Black History Celebration.
