This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year is a challenge, but this one is special. My 5th graders have finally returned to the classroom and are thriving (AND struggling)! They are hard workers, and strive to be their best day in and day out, but after a year-and-a-half of shutdowns and distance learning, they are still getting used to daily life in the classroom. Along with academic content, they are learning how to interact with peers and adults, and manage their own emotions - joy, frustration, excitement, sadness, all of it. We are still in a pandemic after all.

My Project

I want to create a calming corner in my classroom using a designated area where students can relieve anxiety or stress that they may encounter throughout our school day. A calming space provides a safe area for students to practice mindfulness and a peaceful place to relax and regroup.

It's been said that "Students must Maslow before they can Bloom." This means that children's basic needs must be met before any progress can be made any where else including academics.

It is incredibly important that students feel safe and secure in body, mind, and spirit to grow.

In our classroom calming corner, students can use a variety of different objects to help the refocus and relax, so that they can better focus on the academic learning that is happening. Examples of objects in the calming corner are: read a picture book(s) where the characters are also dealing with different emotions like anger or frustration and how to handle those big emotions, meditate using guided meditation cards, and/or use sensory items to provide an outlet for nervous or angry energy.
