My school is in a small, rural community in northern-lower Michigan. For the most part, my students come from a very low, socioeconomic status. Most depend on free or reduced rate breakfast and lunch, and food backpacks that are sent home weekly. Despite a lack of resources, they are truly some of the most loving and compassionate students I know. Every year, in lieu of a Christmas present exchange, my first graders collect and donate presents to a local children's hospital. They are a curious, hardworking, and kind hearted group of children.
There is a famous quote that says: "Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." We know not all students get that kind of experience regularly at home, which makes the importance of regular read aloud time in the classroom so important. Read aloud time is a moment when it doesn't matter how strong of a reader you are at the moment; everyone is experiencing the same moments at the same time. I would like that time to be made even more comfortable by adding a comfortable place for this type of learning to take place. A classroom rug would provide a cozy place for every student in the classroom.
