My Students

This year I had the privilege of moving up to the high school that my previous school feeds into. It has been awesome getting to see students I have taught for the last 4 years every day! My role now, however, is quite different. I have the opportunity to work with the students that are in danger of not graduating. They are the students that dropped out for awhile or did not earn credits because of truancy and/or failing semesters. Every student I have this year has a unique story and reasons for being in this position. The one thing they all have in common though, is that they are all working hard to make up their credits so they can walk the stage with their original class they started school with.

I know it is easy for people to jump to conclusions and decide for themselves that these kids are the trouble makers and drop outs and that they deserve the consequences of their actions.

But what most people don't understand is that they are here because of the unfortunate cards they were dealt at much too young of an age. They each deserve a second chance!

My Project

The students I have in my class are in here several times a day trying to make up their credits so they can graduate. These students are already not your "average" student and more than likely do not perform well in the "average" classroom. They also do not have the same motivators that many of the students in your typical school do. Many do not have parents at all, and those that do, they are not present in a positive way. Many of these kids do not believe they have a chance to be successful after high school. Many of these kids have been through things that you or I wouldn't experience even in nightmares; experiences that led many of these kids to drop out or stop coming to school because of the emotional toll it took on them. Fortunately though, they are back and doing what they can to try and graduate. They have a long road ahead of them and some of them have as many as 20 high school credits to make up in just one year. And all of these have to be done behind a computer. As you can imagine, that is tough for high school students, but even more so for these kiddos.

I believe that futons, bean bags, camping chairs and other types of seating make sitting at a computer all day much more bearable!

I have already been given 5 laptops so that the students can sit on the floor and in the two gaming chairs I already have. Productivity has already drastically increased with the kids that take advantage of them.
