Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Recognize and embrace your uniqueness. I don’t think the ratios are going to change anytime soon. But, I don’t think it has to be a disadvantage. Being a Black woman, being a woman in general, on a team of all men, means that you are going to have a unique voice. It’s important to embrace that.” - Erin Teague, Director of Product at Yahoo

I teach in a fifth grade regular education, special education, and English Language Learner inclusion classroom.

My students, this year, range in ability over six grade levels, grades 1-6, in the area of math, reading, and writing. By the time they get to fifth grade, some of them begin to realize that they are behind their classmates. It is my passion to change that and help all of them be successful.

My Project

The majority of my students are Hispanic, black, and of low economic status. My goal with this project is to inspire young girls and children of all ethnicities to become innovative thinkers. I plan to teach them that their gender, ethnicity, and low economic status does not define their roles in society, but that it can be used to redefine society.

To spark their interest and motivate them, I plan on showing my students applications, projects, ideas, and inventions in science, technology, engineering, and math that were created by women, people from low economic statuses, and ethnicities that represent themselves.

After teaching code to my students, my next goal with this project is to take their learning of code in the virtual (online world) and apply it to their tangible world (right in front of them). I would love to have them use their coding skills to program robots to perform certain tasks. I am requesting the UBTECH Tank Bot, for beginners, and an UBTech Inventor robot kit (advanced). The UBTech Inventor kit comes with the robotic supplies to create and command robots that walk, talk, dance, roll on tracks, pick things up, think and do much more. It comes with a visual drag and drop computer programming tool that introduces children to fundamental programming concepts and builds upon previous learned ones. These robotic products will be able to evolve in its complexity and function along with my students as they become more knowledgeable in their programming skills.

Computer programming challenges ALL students to think through problems, come up with more efficient ways to solve problems, and really think through situations. My hope is for this project to open their eyes to endless possibilities in this field and beyond.
