Nestled in a Title I school in, MD, my Life Skills classroom is made up of energetic students with disabilities ranging from autism, intellectual delays, and down syndrome. My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.
My students have set high goals for themselves that truly inspire me and guide my teaching!
My Project
Everyone wants to feel independent and be able to complete daily tasks with little to no help. My students have been asking for more responsibility since making school deliveries, running a coffee cart, and typical classroom jobs just aren't enough! Families of my students are also asking how to have their children become more independent at home. The items requested will be used to create a Vocational Skills area in our classroom to teach and practice essential skills that anyone would need as they get older. Students will learn how to brush their teeth, set a table, do laundry, and basic cleaning skills. These skills will build confidence and self-esteem while also opening up many new opportunities and career paths for some amazing kids!
