I teach a self-contained third grade class of energetic learners. I strongly believe that students need to be on-task and actively involved in learning as much as possible. One technique I use to keep students listening in group instruction and discussion is to have every student answer every question on dry erase boards. The boards are simply an 8'X 4' sheet of white board that I purchased from a local hardware store and had cut into 1' X 1' pieces for each child. Students love to use the white boards to answer questions in all subject areas, particularly in math. The white boards allow me to assess individual student responses on an on-going basis without a lot of paper and pencil work. I note students who give incorrect answers or who struggle to get the answers so that I can remediate these students later. With individual answers, the class in general does not know when specific students are missing the answers. This creates a risk-free environment for struggling students to attempt the answers. For this project we need a set of dry erase markers for each student. Students will be able to use these markers throughout the year for every subject matter. The markers and white boards provide opportunities for each student to answer every question and encourages struggling students to respond and participate in class. The students also enjoy using the boards.
