This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My school is a Title 1 School. That means we are socio-economically challenged!! Over 80% of our students are on free or reduced lunch pricing.
I am a Science Intervention teacher--that means that I teach the "hard to reach" kids. The students that other teachers have problems with. I live by the motto, "The kids don't care about what you know until they know that you care".
Our Science teachers (excluding me) have been teaching at this school for many years. They have a "Lecture, Bookwork, Test" mentality. I want to show my students and the other Science teachers, that using more hands on activities is a more creative way to prepare the students. Lab activities and demonstrations attract and hold their attention. Thus the need for the books on middle school experiments and labs.
I need the information that is available from current literature on how to do labs and experiments.
I would love to engage my students in activities that will prepare them for life and work. I have request 10 books that deal with Middle School Lab activities and demonstrations. I feel the biggest drawback from doing more labs in class is that the teachers are unfamiliar with the many activities that are available. These books will be shared with the members of our Science faculty. Students today need to be involved with problem solving lessons and implementation of change strategies. The bottom line is our Science instruction needs more "hands on" experiences. If I do more laboratory activities with my students, I know that I can encourage the other teachers in our school to follow suit. I, along with our school administration, am convinced that teaching with demonstrations and "hands on" lab work is the key to developing inquiring minds and a lifelong appreciation for Science.
By helping purchase instructional material on creative labs for middle school students, my students will gain an understanding of basic scientific inquiry and problem solving. Help me lead by example those teachers that are reluctant to use hands on activities in their classes.
