This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a small, rural community school housing 4K-8th grades with over 50% of students living in poverty. A typical day in my classroom is very busy! I am a special needs teacher that has students coming and going about every 30 minutes to an hour to work on remedial skills and individualized goals.
All my students have a documented disability, primarily in reading, writing, and/or math.
During my time with them each day, they work hard and are always trying their best to improve.
My Project
My students use standard pencils and colored pencils daily. Keeping all these pencils sharpened has put a strain on our small sharpener. Having a higher capacity pencil sharpener will allow for easier and quicker sharpening allowing for more instructional and work time.
My students often have sensory issues that affect their sight causing them to strain or rub their eyes.
Therefore, using colored paper for assignments helps to alleviate some of that strain making it easier for them to focus on the assignment. Because each student has a documented disability, they require an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Most IEPs are 7 to 10 pages in length and require several copies. Regular copy paper is required in order to print and copy these documents.
