In a classroom of gifted learners there is never enough: enough tools to capture their discoveries and creativity; enough access to information; enough ways to differentiate for diverse learners; or enough motivation to persevere. They need more.
We are a classroom of 27 gifted and talented second-grade students from Utah.
They come from all over our district to participate in instruction designed to extend their learning. These kids are hungry for opportunities to interact with information of all kinds and they need 21st century skills to become the entrepreneurs, writers, government leaders, artists, and scientists they already want to become. They can't put a book down, cheer for math class, and have a passion for something they'll be happy to tell you all about. They love the complexity of technology and the seemingly endless amount of new tools and ideas it facilitates. They are creative in their thinking and enjoy learning new ways in which to express their ideas. What I enjoy the most is their individuality. Every one of them has something unique to develop. Seeing each of them grow is why I love being a teacher.
My Project
Having iPads in our classroom technology center will give students more opportunities for access to challenging material. Apps like Civilization Revolution will enhance our understanding of history. The Pocket Universe opens up the sky for study. Creative expression is increased as students create meaning using iMovie and learning is organized in digital portfolios using Evernote. Math has never been more interactive and challenging in apps galore. This is just the tip of the the iceberg of things we will do.
Please help me open up new windows of discovery for my students with this technology.
