You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. ~Clay P. Bedford
I teach in a title one, low income-high needs school.
The students I work with come from very troubled homes that require them to be more independent than most. However, when it comes to their learning they don't have that same drive. Many of them don't see education as a necessity and neither do their parents. This is causing a huge problem in our attendance and in our drop out rate. I strive daily to inspire my students to be more curious about the world and hope that by doing so I can create life-long learners.
My Project
My students seem to be inspired by activities that they get to chose themselves. However, I don't have enough for all of them and this creates a lot of "kung fu fighting". I am asking for materials that will provide my students with choice of what they want to learn, as well as materials that will help spark their curiosity about reading and writing. These materials will allow students to work independently or in partners and to rotate through different stations throughout the room. They will also help provide me with time to pull individual students or small groups that need extra attention.
By helping me purchase these materials, you will be helping to spark the curiosity of not just this group of students, but for years of students to come.
You may be a part of the solution to the problem of attendance and drop out rate. If we can inspire these students at an early age to become life long learners I believe we can change their way of thinking permanently! By providing more choices in the classroom we can end the "kung fu fighting" and inspire student-centered learning!
