My fifth graders are smart, funny, creative individuals, with a desire to take their learning to the next level. These students are caring, hard-working, and blow me away every day.
My class is multicultural and incredibly diverse.
There are three different languages spoken in my room and cultures represented from all over the world. My students come in every day with their own unique backgrounds and knowledge that they are eager to share with the class. These children aren’t just students, they’re teachers, to one another, and to me. It is such an honor to be with them every day.
My Project
We are currently in our second semester here in fifth grade and my students are busy, busy, busy. As some of the students in my second reading class were book shopping, they noticed we had a wider selection of books and all started asking, “What’s going on Ms. Gordy?” I told them that the first block students asked if we could do a DonorsChoose.org project. They all stared at me silently for a minute and immediately launched into requests for their OWN book project on DonorsChoose.org. “We really do need MORE books Ms. Gordy.” “Yeah! You got 20 new books, but you have MORE than 20 students Ms. Gordy.” “Can we PLEASE pick out new books too, Ms. Gordy?!” Now, how can I deny a request like THAT? Just like the other class, they all agreed to select one book they thought should be added so they could read it during our next fiction unit.
The students are very excited about the prospect of new books to read in our classroom.
Students were buzzing around the room talking about the book they requested, asking about what books the others were getting, and sighing wistfully at the thought of the project being funded. Please consider donating to this project and show my students that you can get behind their reading as well!
