This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher, you must strive for a balance between nurturing a students’ strengths and teaching and providing accommodations and supports as needed. My classroom consists of a diverse group of students in grades two and three with varying cultural, educational and socio-economic backgrounds. By taking each student’s goals, needs and interests into account, I create differentiated and effective lesson plans and activities to accommodate their many learning styles. I always marvel at the seemingly-limitless curiosity and determination of these young children. Working with students with disabilities has truly been a wonderful and rewarding experience!
My Project
My Special Education Classroom would benefit from having the Surf Portable Lap Desks, Bouncy Bands and Ready to Read Bean Bag Chairs to help students to stay focused, release excess energy, and succeed academically.
Flexible seating is an innovative way to provide students choice in the type of learning space that works best for them.
The flexible seating items on my wishlist will help me do just that!
Many students do not like sitting at traditional desks and chairs. Over the years I have noticed many students preferring to sit or lay on the floor. Unfortunately, laying on the hard surface can become uncomfortable quickly. It also makes writing the assignment difficult and sometimes illegible. Some of my students require occupational or physical therapy or both. Providing them the opportunity to choose to sit on the floor while addressing their needs is important. The Surf is a versatile floor desk that provides students with both a comfortable seat and a surface to write on while allowing them to be seated on the floor. Many of my students have difficulty with their attention span due to frustration, hyperactivity or sensory issues. Bouncy Bands is an effective way to allow these students to quietly move while they work. These bands can be easily be attached to student chairs or desks when active sitting is required. The stretchy bands help to relieve excess energy, stress, and anxiety while improving students' time on task. The Relax and Read Bean Bag Chairs can be used during independent reading, small group work, on the floor or when a child may need some time to just decompress comfortably with a book.
Flexible seating will help my students succeed academically by keeping them focused while accommodating their learning styles and needs.
