Every Teacher's Dream...Get Your Nose Outta That Book!
My students need to build a library with books like The Heir, Wonder, The Elite and The Young Elites to bring back their love of reading and improve their literacy and language skills.
"Please find a good stopping place." I patiently wait for my students to pull their noses from their books. This is every teacher's dream, and I love seeing teenagers fall in love with books again.
I teach at a Title-One Intermediate School, with over 75% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch and breakfast each day.
Most of the students I serve are bilingual, and will be the first generation in their families to attend college. They are enthusiastic and responsible young people with a zest for life.
I have 184 eighth grade students that enter my classroom each day. Each one of them brings his/her own interests, needs, and abilities. Their reading levels range from third to twelfth grade.
I teach one special literacy class each day, for students that are far below grade level in reading. This class also serves students that are English Language Learners who have not been able to acquire the language sufficiently.
I also teach Advanced Students, which includes GATE students as well. Many of these kids read faster than I do, which means I have a hard time keeping up with their desire to read something new.
My Project
In our classroom, genuine reading is not an assigned book, paced and interrupted with reports and worksheets. Students fall in love with reading because they have the freedom to choose what they want to read. Every student in my class is expected to carry a reading book at all times, in every class, every day. When they finish a test, they read. When they arrive to school early, they read. When they finish classwork before their peers, they read. I give them ten minutes each day to read silently. The goal is to have read 25 books by the end of the year!
So far, every student is on board. They talk about books in class and the hallways, they share and suggest books with their friends, but supplies are running low! With so many different reading needs in one classroom, offering choices that will not only interest them, but introduce them to different genres and teach them about their world is almost impossible. Books like Wonder, The One, The Elite, The Heir and The Revenge of Seven will give my students a great selection of books to read from.
I need a classroom library that is large enough to cover all of the genres, reading levels and interests of my students.
Free reading will help my students' reading comprehension, literature analysis, vocabulary and fluency. In addition to these skills, the more books I can offer, the more knowledge they can acquire about the world around them.
It is possible for every student to love reading again and to become a lifelong reader when given the right opportunity with the right book.
