Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
CE school is a Title 1 School located in Midvale, UT, which has a high incidence of gang affiliations. The student population includes students from many cultures, speaking many different languages, and all receive free lunch. Current data in the area of English Language Arts indicate that approximately 60% of students in grades 1-3 are well below grade level benchmarks on the district wide screener.
This project will give books to students in an effort to increase their interest in reading, and their ability to read.
The variety of books will appeal to girls and boys of all elementary age levels, and provide access to a variety of genres including fiction and informational text. The books will give students an opportunity to build relationships with characters, and live vicariously through their experiences. They will be able to explore different lands, both real and fictional, and accomplish incredible things, while reading about the characters in stories, and real people and animals.
At Copperview, there is a large emphasis on positive behavior intervention and supports. As part of the reward system for following the rules, and helping others meet the expectations students will earn the books provided by this project. The books will have a hand written note to the student reminding them of what they did to earn the prize, and also will be something they can share with their families.
I plan to keep a list of which students choose which books so I can have a special conversation with them about the books they chose. If they need help reading them, I will be available to support that, too. The follow-up conversations will encourage them to use vocabulary from the text, and talk specifically about the text elements used by the author to create the text.
