Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every picture tells a story. When you look into the microscope you see the hidden details of how life works. Each of us sees the world through the lens of our personal experience, and tells a different tale.
I want my students to observe carefully, document & share what they see.
The area is known for violent crime.
The facilities are old and outdated. Every surface is thick with paint that covers graffiti. Poverty and violence are pervasive. Stress and grief color everything and fear is an undercurrent that does not leave.
Yet like HS students everywhere, the girls cluster to share makeup tips and the guys organize competitions.
My high school students are struggling to stay focused despite the high frequency of violent crime. Part of our classroom time is given over to coping with the emotional stuff that follows crises, waves of crises.
They come from loving families, but resources are limited both at school and at home. School supplies and nurture are in short supply. Parents work 2 jobs to pay the rent.
I regularly raid my own kitchen for supplies to use on labs, and spend my free time listening & counseling.
My Project
What can we give these kids which will make some kind of difference? A different vision. A voice. A skill set which will open doors and broaden horizons.
I want to increase the use of microscopic slides in the science classes I teach. To do this we need a slide-making kit and a cell culture kit.
Students will be creating their own slides, and creating an archive of microscopic images. To do this we need a high resolution slide scanner. They will be creating their own stories of the wonders of the human body as they learn about how different organ systems work, using these images.
High school is brief.
For most of us it was a golden time when so many possibilities lay ahead. Help these students see the possibilities: Science can broaden horizons for these kids.
Lots of schools need help. But help for this school is symbolic as well as practical. Show these students that their needs do count. Right now. Help me help them focus ON LIFE THRU SCIENCE. Many thanks for your consideration.
