Help me give my students the opportunity to build with LEGOs like many other children do every day. My students need the bigger LEGO pieces to help build their fine motor skills.
In our special needs preschool program, we are working with students to help them gain foundational skills so they can access the regular education classroom. This is the beginning of their education, and we are laying the foundation for the next 12 to 15 years of school they have ahead of them. Every day, I get to see magic happen, and the rewards are so many. The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.
I have two amazing sessions of special needs preschool children with a wide range of abilities.
I have students with autism, hearing impairments, cerebral palsy and downs syndrome. My students range in age from 3 years old to 5 years old.
My Project
Every child wants to play with LEGOs and use their creativity to build something magical. I am asking for 2 different sets of LEGOs for our classroom. The Tubes & Exploration set will help us develop problem solving and mathematical thinking. Following instructions to assemble LEGOs also has a lot of benefits for children's problem solving, focus, and attention to detail. Ideas of symmetry, balance, shapes, and sizes are explored during play with LEGOs.
Social-emotional learning in early childhood sets the stage for students’ future behaviors in schools.
Using the LEGO emotions kit, my students can work on their fine motor skills as well as talk about feelings while we build. Learning is done best in natural occurring situations.
The pop-em shape beads are another way some of my students can build their hand strength while working on shapes. Some of our students are working on the concept "put in" and these beads are the right size for their little hands.
Every child wants to draw a picture and have others recognize what they made. Using the stencils to draw animals lets everyone be an artist. We like to lay out different table top activities that kids can complete independently, and this is one of those activities.
