Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at a high poverty Title I school. My classroom contains English Language Learners, students with both academic and physical special needs (including ADHD and Autism), and several students that do not have many opportunities.
I love being able to create a caring and respectful classroom community for my students and offering opportunities that show them all of their possibilities!
My favorite part of teaching is building a community in my classroom and creating learning adventures that get my students excited about learning so that they cannot wait to come to school.
My Project
My students love learning through hands-on games and activities. My goal is to have a variety of materials for students to use to target handwriting, literacy, and math.
Having hands-on, engaging materials is especially important for students with ADHD, Autism, anxiety, and sensory processing disorders.
I am requesting Lakeshore alphabet write and wipe tracing cards, alphabet light table tracing letters, see-thru tracing mats, story stencils, answer buzzers, and laminating sheets. Students will be able to work on fine motor and handwriting skills as they trace and write alphabet letters with the wipe and write tracing cards and with the alphabet tracing letters that they can use on our light table. They will also be able to place the clear tracing sheet over any worksheet or paper and use a dry erase marker on top. This is a wonderful modification for students that need extra fine motor practice. The story stencils are a great way to engage students in sentence writing while providing a word bank to use. The answer buzzers will be used during small group reading and during intervention time. I will be able to hold up sight words or math facts and students can buzz in when they are ready to answer. It's a fun way to build fluency and students can answer at their own pace. Finally, the laminating pouches will be used to laminate skill-based materials that I will create for sensory bins. This helps the various centers last longer and become more durable.
