Help me give my students an assortment of literature that will reach my African American students. I wanted to focus on partner reading and pulling some of these Newberry Honor books to use in my guided reading groups!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title One school in SC. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and free lunch. We are high poverty and unfortunately, many of our students face struggles that we may never face. My students are fabulous! I have my challenging few, but overall, we are making gains! Every year is unique and this year my students are math rock stars! Our weakness is reading and we spend quite a bit of the day reading and practicing skills to be better readers! We have five reading groups and daily, I try to meet with as many students as I can! With the new Read to Succeed Law, my students face the challenge of being fluent readers by the end of third grade! Help us soar to success!

My dream is to reach children!
I will be transitioning into another grade level at the end of this year and I want to go ahead and get started on my classroom library. I am very thankful for Donors Choose because the library I have now is AMAZING! I have books that cover every genre and that reach most readers! I was thinking about what my library lacks and it lacks diversity. My library lacks the books that a child at TEK could pick up and they could relate to the character because the character looks like them, acts like them, thinks like them, and possibly faces the same curve balls of life as them. I want to add more African American literature to my library. I want to focus on using the novels in guided reading groups, which is why I ordered 2-4 copies of each. Another powerful strategy for readers is partner reading so I have learned to double up on my books so friends can read together.
My students have what it takes to change the world and I want books to be the way they start!
