Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every farm is a textbook."- Aldo Leopold
My students with severe physical and mental disabilities need a hands-on learning experience for them to grasp concepts. Being able to visit a local farm and obtain fresh food and produce will allow them to better grasp the concept of where food comes from.
My students have a variety of disabling conditions but none of those conditions deter us from learning and experiencing about animals, life cycles, crops, and products on the farm.
Students that will be served by this project are in grade 9 through age 21 who have severe disabilities. These students will not graduate from high school with a diploma but rather will receive a certificate of attendance when they transition from high school. All of my students function at a level that is more typical of a preschooler, many are limited verbal or non-verbal, and the majority have some type of fine or gross motor mobility issues. My school is located in rural, Eastern North Carolina and we are identified as a Title I School. Over 80 percent of the population of students at my school receive free/reduced lunch.
My Project
This project will allow my students to make multiple small trips to a local farm where they will be able to actively participate in seed planting, animal milking, and food collection. My students will be able to experience and interact with farm animals multiple times and learn how to grow and produce consumable food.
This project will improve my classroom and change my students lives for the better by allowing them the chance to participate in hands-on learning field trips that are similar to those of their age appropriate peers that incorporates the concepts that they have been studying in Science.
