My students need arts and crafts supplies such as googly eyes, pipe cleaners, Popsicle sticks, glitter, clothes pins, markers, & glue to make awesome projects.
"Every artist was first an amateur," as the literary artist, Ralph Waldo Emerson, so simply stated. Well, those amateurs are in my Kindergarten class and deserve the opportunity to hone their artistic side and make Picasso proud!
The inner-city students in my class are eager to learn and share.
They come to school excited and curious, from all different types of backgrounds and starting points. Given support and opportunities they are all capable of getting a strong educational foundation that will benefit them their entire lives. Opportunities for creativity are part of that foundation. We already create with paper, pencil, & crayons. Sometimes we get crazy and use construction paper, scissors & glue! However, those are basically the only materials we have to use to create. I want to be able to provide students with more options & opportunities to be creative. Thankfully, students at my school do get art instruction. However, even that time is very limited and doesn't leave much time to create.
My Project
Are people naturally creative? I say yes. I see creative beings everyday in my classroom. I want to provide students with these arts & craft materials to allow them to be as creative as possible. We already work on responses to literature, but how much more detailed could their projects be? Given opportunities to explore with different materials can only enhance their view of literature. Will it allow for them to create colorful characters that they can make up stories about? I do believe they will and I can't wait to see them! I look forward to seeing what they can develop with simple items. You never know where their minds will go if we allow them. They will be able to create gifts for loved ones as well as sharpen much needed fine motor skills. The possibilities for these materials are endless with a Kindergarten imagination at the helm.
With the addition of arts and crafts materials, my students will be able to build a strong educational foundation for themselves.
This foundation needs to be well rounded so they can grow & learn to pursue whatever it is they desire. Art is such an essential part of life and it touches all of us everyday. Students need time and materials to develop this side of themselves as well. Creating your own items helps to increase self-esteem and develop pride for these young people, leading to success.
