Our high school is made up of approximately 1,250 students. During the 2014-2015 school year, 12% of our students had disabilities. This percentage has not decreased over the past two years. In fact, the number of students with severe disabilities has grown enough to require a new faculty member.
While many of our students are successful, we do have a significant portion of our school population who are currently reading below grade level, including those students diagnosed with learning disabilities.
Some of these students are my most faithful library visitors. They are truly excited to come to the library to check out new books to read. Yet, they are forced to leave with books each week that they cannot read independently.
My Project
Many of us do not remember the feeling of learning to read. It can be a challenging and disheartening experience. Many of our students with lower reading levels still face such challenges when they are forced to struggle through reading books far above their ability or check out books written for much younger children.
Every student deserves access to books and educational materials that meet their individual needs.
The books that I have requested are specifically written at a lower reading level, but the content is appealing to young adult readers. By providing students with engaging materials that they can read independently, their confidence will grow and reading will become more enjoyable.
