Help me give my students with special needs the equipment like modified hoops, balls, beanbags, markers, cones etc. that support them learning fundamental skills needed for games and activities that they can participate in with classmates.

My Project

I am the Adapted Physical Education Teacher for our entire district, grades K-12. The students I work with have a deficit in gross motor skills and some have cognitive delays. Participating with their peers in Physical Education is challenging but something they really want to do. They want to get out and play with classmates.

In order to teach my students fundamental skills, activities and games, specific equipment can be very useful to give them support and build confidence.

Numbered cones help students know which direction to go during drills and activities. Beanbag balls help students work on throwing for accuracy without having to always run after a ball. Modified hoops help students to be successful while building their skill levels in basketball. Soft frisbees make it less intimidating and safer to learn the skills for ultimate frisbee. Polyspots help students know where to stand in activities like volleyball, softball, yoga and warm ups. Playground balls make it easier to learn how to dribble, catch and pass to teammates in basketball drills and games. Bean bags are used in a variety of modified games and relays. Color coordinating cones, balls, beanbags and polyspots help our younger students learn colors.

No matter what disability my students may have, I need to find a way for them to get in the game and access curriculum. A student may be in a wheelchair, have processing issues, eye hand coordination problems, be hearing or visually impaired, intellectually disabled, have autism or have one of many possible syndromes. One thing remains constant. They all want to get in the game and be a part of what their friends are doing. They all want to play. Thank you for being a part of their success story.
