Finally the green light to teach real literature in our district with the first year of the new Common Core Standards. Enduring understandings and essential questions is what they truly deserve!
I teach in a high poverty, urban school district.
The students are diverse and many receive free lunch. They are nothing short of amazing though, as they come to class thirsty for knowledge everyday, they are my true inspiration! They are resilient and are true champions in every sense of the word.
My Project
I am beginning the school year at a new school site. My former school has been closed by the district and many new challenges await me. I taught at my old school for fourteen years and am excited for the future.
The new Common Core Standards have brought the much needed rigor back to the classroom. However during this year, a transitional year, there are no resources to match the new expectations. I have many resources and will continue to search high and low for everything I need. This class set of books will introduce the students to a great literary masterpiece and the classic theme of friendship. It seems so simple, yet so powerful, to befriend those different from ourselves and embrace the positive gift of life.
My students and I will read this classic book, and be grateful in having the opportunity to study both individually and in groups.
This opportunity will allow the students to further their studies at home in addition to the classroom setting. Our school day is so short and packed that many will take the book home to reread and discuss with their families. Book sharing is so important and younger siblings will benefit from the students reading it aloud.
