My students need more books, including "Watchmen" and " The Tattoo History Source Book," that will convince them that reading is so much better than what they've experienced so far.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you recall the books that made you love reading? The ones you'd read with a flashlight after bedtime? They may not have been world class literature, but they made you a reader. My students need to meet their books. I need books so I can make the proper introductions.
Our school's eighty-year-old library is undergoing major renovation.
The books were packed away this summer and won't be back for a long time, maybe all year. How do we teach our high school students to love reading without books? That's where you come in!
Our students are hard-working and eager to learn. About 86% of our students are considered "economically disadvantaged." Most work after school until late at night to support themselves and, in many cases, their families. The large majority do not have books in their homes and frequently come to us several grade levels behind. They have not had strong opportunities to become readers, but give them a high-interest book and time to read, and they transform!
My Project
After spending hours reading in my classroom last semester, the students sent me notes with comments such as "I never thought I'd say this, but I really love reading now." Or, "It always seemed so boring to me to read, but not now I love it!" They mentioned specific books they'd read and how they'd never forget them. We had book talks in class. We laughed together. Our classroom became a place of joy and fun and real rigor. Non-readers walked out of their junior year as readers. We want all of our students to have the opportunity to become life-long readers (which means life-long learners), but we have to be able to provide them with high-interest books. We know that every one of our students is a reader, in fact, just as soon as we get the right book into their hands. Will you help us?
Our high school students are against some tough odds.
They deserve every resource and all the guidance we can possibility provide. We only have them in school for a few more years. We can't let them miss this chance to have time to read in a place with great books available for free. Strong reading skills predict a world of success. The construction can't be allowed to stop them from getting the resources they need to set their lives on another course.
