Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I have had the most amazing group of middle schoolers you will ever see. On paper, they don't look like much. Any educated person would look at the demographics and think "these kids won't amount to much." Over ninety percent are socioeconomically disadvantaged; over eighty percent have a language other than English spoken at home; thirty percent receive services from the Special Education department. Yet, 100% meet growth measures and our district is rated significantly higher than any of the neighborhood schools our students would attend.
My students prove to me every day that anyone can rise above their circumstances!
My Project
Many students of all ages struggle to maintain focus or process their environment differently than others. Studies show that using a yoga ball as a chair helps in these areas. However, no middle schooler wants to be singled out for being different. All middle school students are extremely aware of labels and just want to fit in with their peers.
My goal is to remove the stigma of ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder by providing all of my students with a yoga ball as a chair.
Even general education students will benefit from the added balance and core conditioning that this will provide. I hope you will help me make this happen!
