Mrs. Biddle from Greensboro NC is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need math manipulatives like counters, dry erase markers, card stock and index cards for a new program. These materials will allow me to make personal whiteboards for each student at our school.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is comprised of 620 students from varying backgrounds. The majority of our students are African American and Hispanic. We are Title I and provide free breakfast, lunch, and dinner (as well as a healthy snack) to 100% of our students daily. Over 80 families receive weekend food through a backpack program. We also stock a clothing closet and have partnerships with the Rotary Club, as well as many local churches and universities. As a staff, we work together to find unique ways to meet our students' needs, not only in the classroom but in their lives as well.
Although they may not have much, our students are eager to learn and excited to be at school!
This shows as our test scores have met or exceeded growth for 3 straight years, and we are working hard to continue that trend. Funding has been drastically cut in recent years which impacts our students directly. This leaves the school little money to use toward classroom supplies.
We are implementing a new research-based program called Eureka Math. Our students come to school without many experiences, and the ability to teach using items they can touch and interact with greatly increases their ability to learn. Additionally, it allows students to work with tasks in centers, giving teachers the time and space needed to pull small groups of students for enrichment and reteaching.
While teaching math, the ability to "see" students' thinking is immensely important.
Having personal white boards that students can work on will allow our teachers to see how students are solving problems in real time, as they can hold their boards up at any given moment. Not only is this beneficial in whole group settings, but it also helps during small groups so that students can easily write and erase as they learn how to solve problems and apply mathematics to real-world situations.
When learning about number sense, counting, and all math operations, 2-color counters are essential. This is a math manipulative that is used at every grade level and will allow teachers to give students another opportunity to show their work.
My hope is that providing these materials for use during our Eureka Math block will allow students to have their own "Eureka! I've got it!" moments!
