My Students

Archimedes' legendary “Eureka!” moment was when he made a remarkable discovery known as the Archimedes Principle or buoyant force. Archimedes was so thrilled and excited with this discovery that he immediately began shouting loudly 'Eureka! Eureka!' (I have found it! I have found it!), in delight.

Eureka may not be the exact word my students use, but they love to investigate and explore creative, imaginative ways to find solutions to those investigations through deep critical thinking and STEM activities in their own diversified learning styles.

Discovery is so exhilarating for them!

Our student population reflects our community with its diversity of culture, status and ability. My students range from those who are gifted to those who need modifications and differentiated instruction. Our school has become a safe-haven for students who have been bullied due to physical disabilities, learning disabilities or even extreme creativity, but all of my students have the potential to make huge contributions to our future in mathematics and science.

My Project

The goal of this proposal is to provide my K-5th grade "Creative Corner" lab students with STEM materials that develop curiosity and wonderment about how the natural world interacts. These materials will encourage student-centered investigation so that they can become capable and innovative leaders in our community in preparation for STEM-related careers. This is our second phase of our STEM lab development with the focus this year on science.

Students will use the Classroom Library collection on Biomes and Habitats and kits purchased to do research focused on life, earth and physical science, from animal adaptations and natural disasters to renewable energy and force.

They will complete meaningful projects and experiments in pairs and in small groups to solve real-life problems faced around the globe—using STEM skills to find inventive solutions! In particular interest are ecosystems balance and preservation. Students will be empowered by having access to diversified activities and hands-on immersive learning through STEM guides and idea books.

As students engage in STEM-based activities that address the Louisiana State Standards, understanding that respects diversified learning styles can occur. Although science standards are the focus, these activities will increase scores and competency across curriculum lines of literacy, technology, engineering, and mathematics within the completion of projects.

I love to hear the students’ excitement as they learn and apply the scientific method of discovery, but with these new materials, they will be creating lasting memories of exploration and even shout “Eureka”!
