My Students

I am a Special Education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. Every day, my students are faced with all kinds of challenges. Regardless of this, they always keep a positive attitude about life and their future and come to school, every day, prepared to face any challenge and/or obstacles.

My students are students with learning and emotional disabilities.

They are caring, kind, and so creative. They are visual and auditory learners, understand the growth mindset, and love interactive lessons that celebrate their progress. My class is composed of students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Every day we try to make the most out of our learning experiences, and we are hopeful to inspire them and be part of their learning milestones.

My Project

My students with special needs in high school need to support to not feel discouraged or shamed about their reading abilities. To provide best practices in regards to having interesting and age appropriate material at appropriate reading level (Hi-Lo Reading) and on topics highlighting my students strengths and interests, these materials fit the bill.

These reading materials will provide an eagerly anticipated time of learning to read.

I anticipate being able to have small group reading cohorts along with individual reading time. We have staff in the class that can help lead the cohort work, along with 1:1 time.

Our other work in phonics, reading strategies, and sight based reading program, will help supplement our literacy program. Along with the academics, we work hard to build in the class a culture of growth mindset - it is ok to make mistakes, just learn from them. These books supplying the academic material, along with our supportive social emotional culture of the classroom should help our students improve in reading.

We appreciate your very kind generosity. Thank you!
