My students are from a diverse neighborhood that is high in poverty, but they are enthusiastic about learning and growing. I have students who are missing many basic skills but are willing to learn and work hard.
Enthusiastic and excited when they walk into the classroom, all they need is a smile, a greeting, and a teacher who is willing to get them engaged.
I'm that teacher, but now I need the tools to engage them.
My classroom is a place where students are challenged, accepted, and welcomed, and throughout the year, we spend time debating, laughing, crying, and connecting over literature. Unfortunately, they don't always have the necessary tools or materials that we need to take it to the next level of greatness.
My students, years after they have actually had me as a teacher, still come to me and pop in my classroom to see if I have what they may need... and I always try to make sure that I do!
High school can be so embarrassing and difficult anyway and I want to take that embarrassment away from my students.
One way I started to help do this is by keeping a "toiletry zone" in the classroom. My classroom is stocked with feminine product bags: tampons and sanitary napkins in donated makeup bags and pencil pouches so that any student who might need these items can come in and grab a cute bag and head to the washroom without embarrassment. Often times, students will tell their friends when they are in need that they can pop in my room.
For this reason, I am asking for a large supply of these feminine products to stock this area. I'm asking for lotion to keep near the hand sanitizer, because believe it or not, lotion is another popular request from students! Last but not least, I'm asking for a small storage container to store these feminine product bags.
