This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
are living in the poorest city in the nation. They struggle to get to school with clean clothes and proper shoes. They often move a lot and are raised by one adult and older siblings. They grow up seeing drugs, crime, violence, and guns. Our school is very large and the children receive 2.5 hours of gym time a week. Basketball it very important for their social, physical, and mental well being. The little ones never tire of moving on the scooters.
My Project
We need larger basketballs for the older students and the basketball teams. We have the best teams in the city, and our well cared for gym is used a lot for tournaments and district games. We have one large ball for 350 students. The scooters we have now were purchased with a Donors Choose grant 8 years ago. They are worn out. Nine hundred students use the scooters on a weekly basis. Arm, core and back muscles are conditioned on scooters. Our favorite game, "Go for the Gold" is played on scooters, as well as relay races, and "Winter Olympics".
