Help me give my students basic needs such as undergarments and toiletries. They deserve to be afforded these essential items regardless of their economic status. Hygiene is important for social acceptance, good health and emotional stability.
Riverview Middle School has 51 students with special needs. Our students range from those who have severe intellectual disabilities to students with learning disabilities. Many are living in impoverished conditions as well.
According to Abraham Maslow in his 1943 book, "A Theory of Human Motivation", students cannot learn unless their basic needs are met.
Self-actualization, Esteem, Loving/Belonging, Safety, and Physiological needs take precedence and will consume a child's interests until they are met. In living in an impoverished district, many of our students are not having their core needs met.
Many of our students come to school without the nurturing many of us take for granted.
Riverview Middle School strives to meet the needs of our students by showing love, possibly allowing time to sleep, a safe place to work, and free/reduced breakfast and lunch. In order to meet the basic survival needs, we are buying clothes, snacks, and sanitary items out of our own pockets to ensure our students can focus on learning. Please help our teachers provide the supplies required to assist our students in meeting their full potential.
According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, student cannot learn unless their basic needs are met. Physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Because of this, teaching has evolved beyond the classroom and embarked upon a holistic approach to education and relationships with children.
Many of my students are not getting their basic Physiological needs met.
They come to school hungry and unclean, with no desire to learn. Homelessness and negligent care can impact them daily.
With your help, I can further assist in alleviating some of the minor barriers that impede the happiness of some my students. We have the opportunity to change the outcome for those who are less fortunate.
