I am an experienced educator and I was recently hired for a newly-created Reading Recovery position at my Colorado public elementary school. Reading Recovery is a research-based intensive program for early literacy intervention for struggling 1st graders. Research demonstrates that 1st grade is the critical age to catch students who are struggling and provide them with intensive, 1 on 1 instruction to bring them up to grade level, guaranteeing future educational success. This is an extremely successful program, and I am very proud to hold this important job to help our 1st graders succeed.
It is important that the learning a 1st grade student receives in this specialized environment be extended to home and classroom. Because this is a newly-created position and there have been drastic budget cuts in my district, I am beginning this position with virtually no materials. Students will need book bags to take books back and forth between home and school so that they can practice newly acquired skills with their families. They will need journals to write, small whiteboards and markers to write words and sentences that connect to the stories we are reading in their lessons, and storage tubs to use as book boxes to take books from our lessons back to their regular classroom for extended practice. These supplies will help to extend the new learning gained from their reading recovery lesson into the classroom and the home.
Thank you for understanding the necessity of these supplies to help extend our students' literacy learning. It will make a difference in these children's lives for years to come.
