This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This semester, I am continuing my role as a reading interventionist. Many students come from the Virginia Park, Highland Park and LaSalle Gardens neighborhoods of inner-city Detroit. 78% of students identify as coming from a low-income household. According to MSTEP testing, 18% of students (grades 6-8th) are proficient in reading.
I have identified students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade who are not meeting grade-level reading expectations.
It is crucial that these students are given the opportunity to make significant reading gains and become college and career ready.
It is so important to provide intervention to students at this stage before entering high-school and beyond.
My Project
In addition to reading intervention during the day, I would like to start an after-school book club for 6/7th graders. This book club will be primarily for students who I service that are 2 or more years below grade-level in reading. To do this, I need our first book club novel as well as snacks for the students to eat.
This book club will allow students to access and discuss contemporary novels.
This will be an opportunity for students to explore reading outside of a traditional classroom. Many of the students I work with do not enjoy reading and do not read outside of school. This club will be a chance to read and have conversations around high-interest novels.
