My kindergarten classroom is a place of learning, discovery, challenge, friendship, acceptance, and love! This energetic group of 5 and 6-year-old children challenge me every day, and I could not be more thankful! Many of them come from low-income homes. These students come to school, ready and happy; our classroom is their "second home." Our class treats each other as a family, with kindness, respect, manners and extreme gratitude.
My students are very energetic, creative and determined this year!
Their energy levels are contagious, and I thrive on their spunk. They come to school ready to soak as much knowledge into their brains as possible. I base my teaching on the quote "What we learn becomes a part of who we are." I want my students to embrace their learning, to own their education, and to be lifelong learners!
My Project
Our classroom is in need of some foundation supplies to help students' learning as well as organize our classroom materials. This year our district rolled out a Standards Based Report Card. This meant teachers went from assessing skills on a rubric to skills based on the standards they were teaching. The skills have always been taught through curriculum using the common core, but assessing these skills in the primary grades can be tough. By helping children with their number sense and playing games like add to 20, a teacher can assess through work and play if a student is understanding the concept.
Behavior and time management are two crucial aspects an educator must be able to establish and control in a classroom.
Supplies like a large timer to manage time as a classroom during centers or small timers to watch the timer count down as a student takes control of themselves before rejoining the class can be essential to a classroom. Lapboards give students a way to illustrate their frustrations without having to leave the classroom.
A classroom has essential items it needs such as reading material and math materials. The touch and read phonics match is a set to further reading and literacy in the classroom. The comprehension wheel challenges students to think about the process of the story and what is happening. The highlighting tape can be used to find sight words in big books, around the classroom, and much more. The number sense stamp set enables students to practice counting skills as well as adding.
