This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are growing up in a major city in our state. Per capita, this city has been rated in the top five most dangerous cities in the past fifteen years. Drugs, poverty, homelessness and gun violence have wreaked havoc on this once thriving city and my students are living in the midst of this chaos. They are constantly given the message that they are not good enough for state-of-the-art technology, top line resources, and comfortable classrooms.

The lack of resources affects the students every day.

My students need to believe that people are looking out for them and want them to succeed. Every day they strive to broaden their horizons and reach for the stars. For many, school is the only safe haven they know. I work to instill in them that there is a bigger world out there than the one they see every day, that they matter, and they will always have a safe place to explore the world around them in our classroom.

My Project

These materials will get my students off on the right food for the new school year. A good portion of my students are caught in a transient or homeless situation due to no fault of their own. Their needs are not being met, which in turn affects their education

Our school and my classroom are safe places for the students to feel welcomed and cared for, providing them with the basics to feel clean and quiet the hunger pains, while in school.

Having school supplies, such as pens, pencils, highlighters, and paper. gives them a good start for the year and ensure they have the tools they need to learn. However, this does not help the hungry or those needing a little freshening up. The toiletries, such as deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste will help them feel a bit more refreshed and ready for school. Disposable wipes are good for those hot days with no air conditioning, to help them feel fresher. The snacks and ready to eat meals give my students a chance to get rid of that hunger pain; which will help them focus on class instead of where their next taste of food will come from.
