This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a first year teacher at an exciting school on Chicago's south side named Hirsch Metro High School. I am teaching both Biology and Earth Science to eager students.
My idea in teaching science is that the students should learn how to do science, not learn about what other people have done in science. Students get so much more out of completing an activity where they discovered why an apple falls from a tree as opposed to listening to someone tell them why this happens.
Due to my teaching style, my classroom requires some bare necessity tools which cannot be supplied by the school. At our school's current state, we have barely enough money to keep the building standing, let alone put money into science equipment.
What I am looking for is a class set of the most common lab supplies. I am looking for a class set of safety glasses, rulers, thermometers, stopwatches, basic calculators and magnifying glasses. I have ~30 students per class, so a class set is 15 of each item (since they work in pairs) except for the safety glasses which I will need all 30 of.
It is so hard to have kids who are so eager to try science but can't because we just don't have the supplies. If they could only try some labs, I'm sure they would be hooked.
Thank you very much in advance for your help!
