My students are unique in their own ways. My classes are entirely composed of students from all around the world. They come from places like South and Central America and places as far as Yemen, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. These are some unique characteristics about my classes: we're all enriched with diversity, different languages, and lots of cultural differences! I go to work everyday delighted to see the differences among my students but also to see the commonalities among them. One of them being, the desire and willing to learn new concepts everyday.
Albeit my students come from different places around the world, they all come with dreams and academic goals to support their families through education, and to become professionals to fulfill their American Dream.
They all have different stories to tell, a lot of them about oppression, violence, and broken dreams from their native countries that I cannot describe in a couple of sentences. They survived the worst. But now, they are safe in my classroom filled with hopes and dreams of becoming fluently bilingual and professionals one day.
These materials are essential components for the project based learning models that I implement in my lessons. Students work passionately in collaboration within their small groups. In my classroom, students gain content knowledge by discovering and exploration of different concepts. As a way to practice their English acquisition skills, students will continuously have small presentations throughout the year; this is why the poster papers are essential components in their learning.
The first project will be a presentation of their own logo through a series of constructions using a compass and a straight edge.
Students will put in practice their acquired knowledge on compass constructions to make different polygons like pentagons, hexagons, and daisy flower shapes, that will then be presented to the rest of the class using sentence frames in English so that students are able to practice their pronunciation.
