My Students

My ESE classroom has students with a wide variety of disabilities. We assist in helping each child eat, explore, and move around using adaptive devises/equipment. They are unable to independently move about the room and require special equipment such as activity chairs, mobile prone standers, and gait trainers. This means we spend a major part of our day on the floor interacting with toys and activities.

Compared to the rest of the county, our school has twice the average percentage of students with special needs, twice the average percentage of students who are homeless, and has the highest poverty rate in the county as 88% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Our kids want to explore without their wheelchairs and a new rug will allow the appropriate engagement for them!

My Project

The students interact every day on the classroom floor. While on a rug they play with musical instruments, switch toys, and listen to stories. The addition of a new rug will give the students an opportunity to explore more than ever! Since our kids cannot independently control most of their movements, it is always possible they may fall to the tiled floor. A rug will help create a safer environment! Our students are in wheelchairs so it is vital to get them moving and interacting on the floor. This kind of activity strengthens all their muscles that are essential to their life now and in the future!
