Essential Appliances for Special Needs Classroom Kitchen

My Students

My class consists of 7th and 8th grade students with multiple disabilities. I have 6 students with a range of cognitive and physical disabilities. Most of my students are nonverbal, dependent on wheelchairs for mobility, and have below a 5 year cognitive age. The primary focus of our school day is on communication and functional life skills in a way that still fits into the curriculum frameworks.

Despite the daily challenges they face my students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and an enthusiasm for learning!

My Project

By recieving the toaster oven, blender, mixer, and griddle, I will be able to give my students the tools they need to learn basic meal prep and cooking skills so that they can develop greater independence. Currently, we only have a microwave in our classroom, so I am incredibly limited in what I am able to teach my students to make as well as teaching them about kitchen safety. For students with physical impairments, I am able to connect the blender and mixer to assistive technology so they are still able to turn these appliances on and off and actively participate in the cooking process.
