Our school is an Apple Distinguished middle school in Montrose, Colorado. Our school has a wide range of sports teams and activities for kids to be involved in. Most kids choose to join sports or band or choir, but some kids don't connect with these activities. This year, CMS is starting an eSports Team for 6th, 7th and 8th graders to join. We currently have 18 kids on the team with a mix of genders, ages and ability levels. Some kids are high achievers in class and others struggle more but they have all found a place on our team. We focus on 2 games, Rocket League and Brawlhalla.
Electronic Sports is a major new trend in the country and around the world.
Students can earn college scholarships and/or make a career out of eSports! Around the US, many schools and districts are putting together teams. From what I have found, there are very few middle school teams or leagues so we have a chance to blaze new trails for our kids.
Our School is building an eSports Team. This is one of the first of its kind teams for middle school kids on the Western Slope. We have about 20 students currently enrolled on the team and they are working hard to gain skill and compete with players from all over the nation.
Gaming should be a full-sensory experience at its optimal level.
We have been fortunate enough in the past to receive a donation to cover the costs of buying gaming controllers to increase access and engagement with the games. Now we are seeking help with funding for headsets for each player. This will become part of their gaming package to use while they are part of the team. Good quality headphones can turn the game in to a whole new level of experience for the kids. Sounds become more immersive and realistic which will only make the game more engaging. This will also give them the ability to voice chat while playing. Both Rocket League and Brawlhalla have important team based components that require the players to be able to communicate as they play.
