Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"We are like the phoenix," said Abuelita. "Rising again, with a new life ahead of us." -Esperanza Rising.
I hope to teach my students how to overcome obstacles and limitations in life in order to be the best students that they can be.
My 5th grade students are hard workers who love to read.
Our class motto is "explain your thinking". The more my students read, the more they are able to develop their own thought processes and explain their opinions and beliefs.
Our school is one that encourages student exploration and believes that all students can be successful.
My Project
I am requesting individual copies of the novel Esperanza Rising. We will be reading the novel in class and exploring different themes from the novel, including human rights and how they relate to students in their own lives. Each student will need their own copy so they put post-it notes on pages as they read to help them keep track of important events and themes. They will also be able to take the books home for further reading. I have four classes of 5th grade students and while we have some books that students can share, I would like them to have their own copies to interact with as we read.
Donations to this project will enable students to interact with a text as a class in ways that they haven't been able to in the past.
The new common core standards are rigorous and require students to think in new ways and develop their own opinions. By having their own copy of the novel, we will be able to dig deeper into the novel and students will have the opportunity explore the text individually, finding evidence that supports their thinking.
