My Students
Our students are engaged, critical-thinkers and leaders who are prepared for the rigors of higher education. Our school's number one goal is for 100% of our students to be accepted into college so that our students have the most possibilities available to them. All of our students come from low-economic backgrounds and receive free and reduced lunches. The majority of our students are African-American and live on the south-side of Chicago. Even still, at our school, our students focus on not only graduating from high school, but demonstrating persistence and grit throughout college. Our school aims to see our students to and through college and that begins in our classrooms every day.
My Project
I want my students to engage more in the Spanish classroom by making materials more accessible and relevant to their lives. The basic art supplies like markers, colored pencils, and glue sticks will allow students to engage with the material and comprehension of Spanish no matter what level of learning they are at.
It is my goal to foster a classroom community that teaches students the importance of understanding, respecting, and working with diverse groups of people.
Additionally, I hope to acquire more art supplies like markers and colored white board markers in order to help bring my examples to life. A lot of my assignments are project-based and many of my students do not have the means to procure basic art supplies like colored pencils or glue sticks. Through my teaching style of using an interactive notebook, students are in need of gluing, cutting with scissors, and coloring with colored pencils in order to create their very own textbooks that they get to keep! Keeping students engaged with stamping their completed work is necessary to maintain accountability so using colored ink pads help students keep track of their progress. These notebooks keep my diverse learners engaged and invested in creating their own unique notebooks as they are completely catered towards them and they get to color coordinate things using colored pencils.
It is imperative for our students to make their experience in our classrooms relatable to their own lives and help them make connections to foster more open and caring environments that are different from those within our city. By having all of these resources, I believe my students can gain the first steps towards engaging in real-world learning.
