Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominantly Latino. Their first language at home is Spanish; most of the students in my class are transitioning out of bilingual education. I also have two students who arrived from foreign countries during the middle of the school year and they do not read, write, or speak English. My students continue to use Spanish to communicate with their peers, but instruction is mostly in English for all students. I translate all lessons and materials for my Spanish speaking student during class. My sixth graders also come from low-income families, but their spirits and hearts are so rich and plentiful. They are sweet and always want to learn more and more each day. My students are very hardworking students.
My Project
My students are willing to learn to read and write in English because they know that they are capable of learning a new language. My students practice daily because they also want to communicate with their peers, and they know that they will eventually receive the content in English only. As of now, I translate all lessons in class and I also translate all materials in advance so that my students receive the same instruction in their native language. Aside from translating, I also provide daily ESL instruction to my non-English students so that they can begin their journey of learning English. At the moment I supply the students with small booklets I print out so that they can connect the pictures with the words. It would be wonderful to have workbooks and flash cards so that the students can have more additional practice in school and at home. The workbooks would be consumable so that students can keep their work and see their progress. The flash cards would be reusable for future students who may need them.
