Our school is located in Northwest Arkansas. The majority of the students are English Language Learners at varying stages of proficiency and come from many different countries around the world. They come to school each day eager to share and learn from each other.
Our students work diligently at school to think, process information, and speak in two languages while learning content instruction in the classroom.
Approximately 75% of the students in our school are English language learners. Many languages are represented in our school, including Spanish, Marshallese, Chuuk and Pohnpei. Additionally, 92% of the students receive free/reduced meals.
My Project
Students who are learning English need to continue practicing language skills during the summer. By attending summer classes, they are able to practice their language, literacy, and math skills and avoid the summer slide that some students experience.
Our school will host a mystery-themed ESL summer school for students in kindergarten through 5th-grade to provide opportunities to maintain or even increase their proficiency in English, literacy, and math during the summer.
Students will need basic school supplies such as pencils, composition notebooks, crayons, markers, and post it notes. They will use manipulatives that include math counters, play dough, flashcards, sidewalk chalk, and foam dice to facilitate learning. At the conclusion of the summer program, student attendance will be rewarded with a mystery-themed memento such as an invisible pen with a UV light.
