ELL students new to the country and its culture, despite having low English proficiency their motivation to learn is high. Many of the students did not have a formal education in their country, being this year the first contact they experience with a formal school.
My students are ELLs who migrate to the U.S.
to get better opportunities and need to adapt and get used to a new life a new school setting; despite their difficulties, their motivation and energy are an inspiration to offer them the best education possible. Many of these ELL students come to this country and get placed in middle school because of their age despite their low academic levels, between first to fifth grade in reading and math skills. Even with their basic knowledge, they come eager every morning to learn new expressions and adapt successfully in the school system. They are full of dreams and fire in their spirits.
My Project
Many of my students are new to the classroom setting in the U.S. We had a rocky start after the pandemic, we were in the aftermath of the hurricane and lost our classroom supplies and decorations. Humidity and lack of ventilation make the acquisition of a new language a bigger challenge. My students read, highlight, and write reports of our daily findings. We take samples of rocks and trees and learn science with a hands-on experience. Science knowledge that can be achieved through projects and discovery we will really enjoy our new microscope. We learn about our world and how to understand it better while we practice our second language.
