My Students

My students are English Language Learners at all levels, from newcomers, to advanced learners. My beginning readers need a variety of books at all levels to build reading skills and acquire new vocabulary on a daily basis.

The students in my ESL classes come from all parts of the world.

They work hard every day to improve their English language skills so that they can be successful in all of their classes, participate in the life of the school, and graduate from high school along with their peers. They have dreams of attending college and becoming professionals. They hope to be doctors, actors, lawyers, and teachers. An individualized reading library from which students can choose books at their own level to read and respond to on a daily basis is only the first step on the long journey to fulfilling those dreams. With your help, my students can achieve their goals. They have the drive, the potential, and the ability. A wide variety of reading materials to choose from will help to maintain their interest in reading throughout the school year.

My Project

The books that you will fund span a variety of genres, to meet the interests and needs of a diverse group of students. These books will help students to build the reading skills which are essential to success in high school and in college. Our students struggle the most with reading. It is the last of the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in which our student achieve academic proficiency. My ESL students want to succeed and attend college. However, they will only be college ready if they have the resources available to them to build the requisite reading skills. The books in this proposal will add variety to our reading library which is currently lacking.

The reading library represents the cornerstone of my ESL program.

Since the students in my classes have a range of abilities, from beginner to advanced, it is essential that they have a reading library that meets all of their needs. Your donation will greatly enrich the lives of my students. They will have the opportunity for meaningful engagement with literature and with their peers every day, essential components of their growth and future success.
