This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our class is made up of students from all around the world. Many students have just come to our community in the last couple of years. They speak many different languages and come from many cultures.
Every day we come together to improve our English and develop our reading and writing skills.
Students are learning all of the same content as their peers while developing their bilingual proficiency. In our class we study English vocabulary for everyday life, deepen understanding of content areas like science and social studies, and are becoming strong readers and global citizens.
My Project
As we dive into our novel studies, students will benefit from having a copy of the book that they can take home with them, tuck away post it notes, and reference for assignments. In past years I have had to make endless copies out of a limited number of books or best case scenario limit reading to in class time. Will class sets of these high interest, accessible novels, my ESL students will be able to tackle novel studies just like they would in any English language arts class.
These specific books feature characters and problems across the globe.
Students will be able to see themselves and windows to a world they may not have imagined. They touch on themes of identity, community, belonging, and courage.
